The Centre’s ambitious National LED programme – Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) – will be implemented across the country by 2019.
- A total of 9 crore LED bulbs were sold in the country since the scheme was launched a year ago on May 1, which means people will get the benefit of Rs 5,500 crore in their electricity bills.
- It will be implemented across the country by 2019. Nearly 77 crore incandescent bulbs will be replaced till 2019 in the country which will ensure an annual benefit of Rs 40,000 crore to the people in their electricity bills and this will lead the country to fulfil its need of energy security, which is very vital for the nation as it will reduce dependability on coal.
Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) :
- The Scheme was launched as part of Union Government’s efforts to spread the message of energy efficiency in the country.
- LED bulbs have a very long life, almost 50 times more than ordinary bulbs, and 8-10 times that of CFLs, and therefore provide both energy and cost savings in the medium term.
- It will help in saving of energy around 24 crore units every year.
LED ( light-emitting diode ) :
- A light-emitting diode (LED) is a two-lead semiconductor light source.
- It is a p–n junction diode, which emits light when activated.
- When a suitable voltage is applied to the leads, electrons are able to recombine with electron holes within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons.
- This effect is called electroluminescence
