Web-based application on Integrated Waste Management System launched


The Ministry of Environment and Forests on 9 May 2016 launched a web-based application on Integrated Waste Management System (IWMS).


  • The system’s web address is www.iwms.nic.in. 
  • The user-friendly application is capable of tracking the movement of hazardous waste.

Single emergency number ‘112’ to be operational throughout India from January 1, 2017


 

The single emergency number ‘112’ will be operational throughout India from January 1, 2017 to help people reach immediate services of police, ambulance and fire department. 

  • In this regard, Union Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad approved the provision of a single number for various emergency services. 
  • The single emergency number will be similar to the ‘911’ all-in-one emergency service in the United States and 999 of United Kingdom (UK). 
  • It will be accessible even through those SIMs and landlines whose outgoing call facility has been stopped or temporarily suspended. 
  • A person in distress will need to call only 112, which will direct the call to concerned departments immediately for help.

Projects worth Rs. 2446 Crore approved under Namami Gange Programme


Giving a major fillip to Namami Gange programme the Empowered Steering Committee (ESC) of the National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA) has approved projects for Development of Ghats and crematoria in the stretch from Haridwar to Uttarakhand Border in Uttarakhand, Garhmukteshwar in UP, Buxar, Hajipur and Sonepur of Bihar, Sahibganj, Rajmahal and Kanhaiya Ghat of Jharkhand and Delhi and afforestation along the banks of river Ganga. 

  • The total estimated cost of the projects is Rs. 2446 crore.

ComMin launches webbased dashboard for export, import data


 The Commerce Ministry  launched a web-based dashboard to provide an easy access to detailed trade data of the country.

  • The dashboard would give an accurate perspective to the general public on the facts around the trade performance in India, Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said while inaugurating the dashboard. 
  • 'EXIM Analytics' would provide data graphically exposing patterns, trends and correlations that might go undetected in text based data. 
  • It also gives a graphical collection of exports and imports from India for example the export turnover of the country, how it performs over time and what are the export destinations. 

1,020 families hit by 1984 riots to be given Rs 2 lakh


As many as 1,020 families, who were hit by the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and migrated to Punjab from different parts of the country, will be given Rs 2 lakh as part of a centrally-sponsored rehabilitation scheme.

  • Home Minister Rajnath Singh has approved reopening of the scheme for providing rehabilitation grant of Rs 2 lakh each to 1,020 families who had migrated to Punjab from Delhi and other parts of the country following 1984 riots.

About 1984 anti-Sikh riots :

  • The 1984 anti-Sikh riots or the 1984 Sikh Massacre or the 1984 genocide of Sikhs was a series of pogroms directed against Sikhs in India, by anti-Sikh mobs, most notably by members of the Congress party, in response to the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards.
  •  Official Indian government reports admit to about 2800 deaths across India, including 2100 in Delhi.
  • Other independent sources estimate the number of deaths to be around 8,000.

N Chandrababu Naidu launches Chandranna Bima Yojana


Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu launched Chandranna Bima Yojana.

  • It is an insurance scheme by the State government for the working class people on the occasion of May Day in Vijayawada.
  • Almost 1.5 crore workers in the state would be covered under the scheme by which Rs 5 lakh would be paid if the insured worker met with an accidental death, Rs 5 lakh in case of permanent disability and 3 lakh rupees for partial disability.
  • The government officials will conduct enumeration and enroll all the eligible workers under the scheme.
  • The government would earmark Rs 132 crore for its implementation.

Union Government launches Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana


The Union Government launched Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) for providing free of cost LPG (cooking gas) connections to women from BPL Households.

  •  It was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Maldepur Morh, Ballia in Uttar Pradesh.
  •  The tagline for the scheme is Swachh Indhan, Behtar Jeevan. 

About Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana :

  •  Under PMUY, each of the beneficiaries will receive monetary support of about 1,600 rupees to get a connection of cooking gas.
  •  It includes administrative cost, pressure regulator booklet and safety hose The scheme seeks to empower women and protect their health by shifting them from traditional cooking based on unclean cooking fuels or on fossil fuels to clean cooking gas.
  •  It is being implemented by Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
  •  It is for the first time this ministry is implementing a welfare scheme. 
  • The identification of eligible BPL families will be made in consultation with the State Governments and the Union Territories.
  •  It will be implemented over three years’ time frame namely in the FY 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19.

UJALA will be implemented across country by 2019


 The Centre’s ambitious National LED programme – Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) – will be implemented across the country by 2019.

  •  A total of 9 crore LED bulbs were sold in the country since the scheme was launched a year ago on May 1, which means people will get the benefit of Rs 5,500 crore in their electricity bills.
  •  It will be implemented across the country by 2019. Nearly 77 crore incandescent bulbs will be replaced till 2019 in the country which will ensure an annual benefit of Rs 40,000 crore to the people in their electricity bills and this will lead the country to fulfil its need of energy security, which is very vital for the nation as it will reduce dependability on coal.

Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) :

  • The Scheme was launched as part of Union Government’s efforts to spread the message of energy efficiency in the country.
  •  LED bulbs have a very long life, almost 50 times more than ordinary bulbs, and 8-10 times that of CFLs, and therefore provide both energy and cost savings in the medium term.
  •  It will help in saving of energy around 24 crore units every year.

National Food Security Act implemented in Manipur

Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh declared that the National Food Security Act has been implemented in the State.

  •  Mr. Singh made the announcement at a function organised by the Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution department at Sangaiprou Godown.
  • The Act would lay stress on those possessing Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) cards.
  •  As per the Act, 11,796 metric tonnes of rice for April was released and one kg of rice would be made available at Rs.3 per kg to the beneficiaries. 
  • AAY card holders can avail 35 kg of rice per a month.

National Food Security Act :

  • The National Food Security Act, 2013  is an Act of the Parliament of India which aims to provide subsidized food grains to approximately two thirds of India's 1.2 billion people.
  •  It was signed into law on 12 September 2013, retroactive to 5 July 2013.
  • The National Food Security Act, 2013 (NFSA 2013) converts into legal entitlements for existing food security programmes of the Government of India.
